Google Docs now allows you to open your Microsoft Office documents on iOS

Google continues to improve the tools of its Google Workspace suite and announces that files in Microsoft Office format can now be edited within its collaboration tools, from iOS.

For a long time, compatibility with Microsoft Office formats assumed the ability to open a Word, Excel and PowerPoint file to edit its content. Today this notion is widening.

More flexibility

Indeed, this compatibility now makes it possible to open a document and edit it directly from iOS but also to register it within the collaboration tools of Google Workspace. Thus the user will be able to select a paragraph in a file .docx integrated with Google Docs and add comments, for example.

In its online office suite, Google has always emphasized the possibility for a team to work on the same file simultaneously. Everyone is thus able to take note of the modifications made by the others. These options now also work for Office files.

Google explains that the supported Office formats are:

Word documents: .doc, .docx, .dot
Excel files: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm (files with maco), .xlt
Powerpoint files: .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .pot

Note that compatibility with iOS makes perfect sense on iPadOS. Now compatible with a keyboard and a trackpad, Apple tablets lend themselves a little better to office use and Google does not intend to leave Apple and Microsoft alone in this sector.

Anyone Can Enjoy It

This feature is not reserved only for paid members of Google WorkSpace; it is also available for all users with a basic Google account.

Google thus concludes a series of work deployed within Web applications during the month of April 2019. At the beginning of last September, this work has been ported to Android.

Note, however, that Google does not allow direct creation of a new Office document. By default, these are always files in Google Docs formats, Google Sheets, and Slides that are generated.

Finally, to take advantage of this compatibility, it is necessary to ensure that the Google Drive application has been updated.
