Jared Isaacman, founder of secure payment processing start-up Shift4 Payments, purchased four seats aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. With a departure scheduled for late 2021, this will be the very first space flight without a professional astronaut.

Elon Musk's firm has been interested in space tourism for several years now, as it is a very promising source of income, and it looks like its goal is finally coming to fruition. 'Wherever you want to go, we'll take you there,' the billionaire told Jared Isaacman.

Four civilian passengers

In addition to being a business leader, Isaacman is also a seasoned pilot. He has flown in over 100 air shows and is the co-founder of Draken International, a program that trains US Air Force pilots. Through this mission, its ambition is to mark “a historic moment to inspire humanity while helping to fight against cancer in children”. He has pledged a donation of $ 100 million to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, and hopes to raise $ 200 million more by pushing citizens to donate to the facility.

One of the seats on board the capsule will be allocated to a person who has made a financial donation to St Jude's Hospital, while another will be occupied by an ambassador of the latter. The fourth seat is reserved for the winner of a competition organized for customers of an e-commerce platform created by Isaacman, Shift4Shop. The goal: to launch their own online store and share their 'entrepreneurial story', the winner will be elected by a jury made up of famous personalities.

A multi-day mission in orbit

The Inspiration4 mission (“4” for the number of passengers) should take off in the last quarter of 2021 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center and will of course be constantly monitored by SpaceX's control center on the ground. For several days, civilians will orbit the Earth and then come to moor off the coast of Florida.

“The Inspiration4 crew will receive commercial astronaut training by SpaceX on the Falcon 9 launcher and Dragon spacecraft, orbital mechanics, microgravity operation, weightlessness and other forms of stress testing. They will undergo emergency preparedness training, space suit and spacecraft entry and exit exercises, as well as partial and full mission simulations, ”says SpaceX. Training is expected to start very soon.
